A lovely old bottle of Macallan 12-year-old Speyside single malt whisky released at some point around 1990 when all of Macallan’s bottlings were from 100% sherry casks.
Bottled at a characterful but easy-drinking 43%, the 12-year-old was the connoisseurs’ choice at the time for Macallan fans who didn’t want to pay £35 for the 18-year-old, and it’s hardly surprising when the quality was this high.
This Macallan 12-year-old was most likely distilled around the mid-to-late 1970s when the distillery’s whisky was entering its last great period, with an abundance of hefty, meaty, chewy fruit and sherry oak flavours and balancing clove and cinnamon spices.
