A one-off Glenmorangie special edition, Glenmorangie 1981 Sauternes Wood Finish was a limited edition of just 4000 bottles that appeared in 2002 as a 20-year-old bottled at 46%.
Glenmorangie 1981 Sauternes Wood Finish spent the last two years of its maturation in casks containing the legendary Bordeaux dessert wine Sauternes from the Premier Grand Cru producer Chateau d’Yquem. As such, it can be regarded as a high-end predecessor to the subsequent NAS and 12-year-old Glenmorangie Nectar d’Or bottlings, though of course as with most things the original remains the best. One of the last great finished whiskies from Glenmorangie.
