Caol Ila, along with Ardbeg and a few very rare Laphroaigs, are among the few malts with enough distinction and balls to withstand the ‘G&M effect’, which basically means the merciless filtering and reduction of many great malts by the bottlers for this CC series over the years.
These Caol Ilas are frequently stunning and often show beautifully at these lower strengths with bags of elegant fruit notes, soft peat/medical complexity and a real old school class. Always worth trying.
