Lesser known than the Macallan 18-year-old series – but considered by many aficionados to be even better – these 1970s vintage Glendronach 18-year-olds are a dazzling example of brilliantly judged cask selection: the majority of the the assemblage was made up of fresh sherry casks, as is evident by the rich chestnut colour, combined with clever use of some seasoned oak casks.

This 1976 Glendronach 18-year-old delivers bags of wonderful nutty, earthy, fruity sherry with all kinds of wee complexities and oily textures lurking on the palate. Brilliant stuff and remarkable that it’s only in very recent times, almost thirty years after they were bottled, that these 1990s 18-year-old Glendronachs are really beginning to be appreciated as the glorious whiskies they are.
