An old black ceramic decanter of Ballantine’s 17-year-old dating most likely from the 1980s or very early 1990s when the remarkable (some might say inexplicable) trend for bottling whisky in pottery was at its peak.

This 75cl ceramic jug was one of several of these two-handled decanters that were bottled in different colours predominantly for export markets. The whisky itself was bottled at 43% and would have been distilled most likely in the late 1960s or early to mid 1970s. Ballantine’s from this era is amazing stuff, and the 17-year-old is one of the standout blended whiskies from the time.
