Dumbarton was a large (25 million litres per year) grain distillery to the northeast of Glasgow. Originally built in 1938, the distillery was closed in 2002 when owners Pernod Ricard decided to focus on the Strathclyde distillery and Dumbarton was later demolished to make way for housing.
During the entirety of its lifetime the majority of Dumbarton’s Lowland grain whisky went into the Ballantine’s blended scotch. Thankfully some casks of Dumbarton’s single grain whisky still survive, a prime example being this 20-year-old ex-bourbon cask of the 2000 vintage bottled at 56.5% by Cooper’s Choice. Grain fans would be advised to grab it while you can.
