A lovely old bottle of Glenmorangie 18-year-old Highland single malt whisky – this presentation was standard throughout the 1990s and early 2000s until the major range facelift of 2007, so this would have been distilled no later than the 1980s, and possibly a bit earlier.

Matured only in ‘mountain oak’ casks, ie first fill and refill bourbon wood, Glenmorangie 18-year-old was almost an anomaly in the distillery’s 1990s releases, when the rage for cask finishing was in its infancy but was being enthusiastically promoted by Bill Lumsden.

Glenmorangie 18-year-old was the connoisseurs pick of the distillery’s core range in the 1990s and remains a delightfully approachable Highland dram with a spicy oomph that gives it a welcome complexity. An elegant after-dinner whisky.
