A bottle of The Compass Box’s The Spice Tree blended malt whisky. One of founder John Glaser’s most famous and controversial creations, Compass Box Spice Tree originally appeared in 2005, but was quickly banned by the SWA due to its innovative use of new French oak staves that were placed inside the casks to increase oak contact.
Not to be deterred, Compass Box set about finding a solution within the rules, and The Spice Tree was soon reinvented. The new Spice Tree whisky reappeared a few years later, with the whisky having been finished in a new type of custom-made cask with French oak for the heads and American oak for the bodies.
An iconic blended malt whisky from Compass Box, in 2024 it was announced that The Spice Tree would be discontinued to make way for new core expressions. This full length gold label edition must be one of the last batches of this superb blend.
