An old litre bottle of the fabulous Laphroaig 10-year-old Islay single malt whisky. This was the mid-to-late 1990s litre from the period soon after the distillery received its Royal Warrant from Prince Charles, and was bottled at the higher strength of 43%.

These mid-late 1990s Laphroaig 10-year-olds are not quite as highly celebrated as the legendary examples from the 1980s and 1970s, but they are still magnificent whiskies in their own right – particularly the 43% versions like this one – and the best of them are bursting with a tropical fruitiness that today’s Laphroaig no longer seems able to replicate. A wonderful old school Islay that remains excellent value even in today’s market.
