The excellent Nikka Miyagikyo is probably the most underrated mainstream Japanese single malt whisky, destined to remain in the shadow of its older and more famous stablemate Yoichi, while lacking the stature or cult appeal to challenge rivals Yamazaki and Hakushu.

Built near Sendai in the Miyagi prefecture in 1969, and known as Sendai distillery until 2001, Miyagikyo is a superb distillery in its own right. The distillery is a multi-purpose facility, making both single malt and grain whisky for Nikka’s blends. 

Miyagikyo’s importance to those blends has led to a scarcity of its single malt of late, with this no-age-statement edition of Miyagikyo replacing the previous core range in 2015 due to the ongoing Japanese whisky drought. 

This fruity, biscuity, gently-spiced Miyagikyo has been bottled at 45% and is a delightful dram – the perfect placeholder bottling while we wait for aged stocks to be replenished.
