A bottle of the legendary Port Ellen 1978 20-year-old Rare Malts Edition bottled in 1998 at its remarkable cask strength of 60.9% as the first of two spectacular Port Ellens released for this series.

Aside from the Queen’s Visit 12-year-old, which was never publicly available, Port Ellen had never been officially bottled before this 1978 Rare Malts Edition appeared, and its historical significance cannot be overstated. Port Ellen had already been closed for 15 years at the time of release, but this whisky led directly to the emergence of Diageo’s Special Releases and fanned the flames of the explosion of interest in Islay whisky that eventually led to the distillery’s revival.
